The magical and admirable teeth of the Heasleys

I guess I didn't know that sometimes the greatest blessing comes from visiting a dentist. Karen went to the dentist for the first time in several years on Monday (she hasn’t been the entire time we’ve been married, so at least three years and some change), and I went yesterday, and both of us only needed a cleaning! As in, no cavities! In fact, when the dentist, Dr. Van Johnson, was done looking at my X-rays after the cleaning he said, “I would love to have your teeth! You and your wife take really good care of your teeth.” He said my teeth were perfect and that I have no problems.

Of course, he and his assistant added that I still have a baby tooth, which I knew. He said, “We should try to hold onto that as long as we can. It may be that the permanent tooth was impacted or there may just be nothing there. We wouldn’t know without more thorough X-rays, but...what’s the point? If it’s there, it’s there, and we should just let it be.” Five years-ish ago (whenever I last visited a dentist), I was told that it would come out in a sandwich someday, but so far, so good. The assistant said that a 80 year old woman came in the other day who still has a baby tooth, so who knows.

Karen and I brush our teeth at least twice daily and we floss our teeth every day. I guess that's the best form of insurance, so we'll keep on keeping on.

  1. I think genetics has lots to do with it. Your brothers all have similar good teeth. So did your Dad. And your Grandpa Heasley died never have experiencing a cavity...which is almost unheard of.

But still, congratulations to both you and Karen. Great news! And what a relief.

    1. Wow! Grandpa Heasley was super lucky. I've had three cavities before, but they caught them so early on that it was hardly an issue. It would be nice to never have one again.

  2. My mom and Brett have great teeth, but I think I got my dad's (which are not as good). He's got lots of great things, but his teeth are not one of them! They waited until my last baby tooth fell out to put my braces on and I was 14, which is not quite as old as you are, but older than a lot of my peers. They say the longer it takes your baby teeth to fall out, the longer you are likely to keep your permanent teeth, which is good! No dentures for you!

Congrats on the clean bill of health for the Heasley family teeth!

    1. Thanks, Heidi! This was not the news we expected this week, so it's turned out really well for us. And that's definitely good news about the permanent teeth. I sure hope that holds true for me. (And posterity?? Let's hope so.)

  3. It was like a miracle. (Maybe it is an actual miracle. Let's say yes.)

The thing that I think is the most amazing is the fact that brushing and flossing is actually effective maintenance. It seems like with all the wear and tear our teeth get that there should be more that we need to do. But there isn't. At least for us. Which makes me happy.
